Remember, though, that anybody anywhere can use, post to,
or
create a web site. They don't have to be an expert, they don't have
to have any education or knowledge - just an account with a Internet
service provider. Just because a web site says its so, doesn't
make it true!
And because there's no "virtual librarian" to help you decide
what's a good source and what's not, you have to use your own
judgment when using the Internet for resources. |

Some general rules:
- Check for a listing of who's responsible for the website - is it just some
person,
or is there a known group behind it? What are their qualifications? Do they
list contact information and educational/professional background information?
- Definitions of Domain suffixes: If the domain name ends
in… the site comes from:
1) .com – a commercial business,
2) .edu- an educational organization,
3) .org- a not-for-profit organization,
4) .gov- the U.S. Federal Government,
5) .mil- the U.S. Military,
6).net- a network.
- Do they ask for a credit card, or your name and address, or anything that
would
be able to lead them to you, your family, or your house? Leave a site
like that
immediately.
- Does it require a program download of something you've never used, heard
about, or seen? Don't download anything to your computer without permission,
and only from sites you know you can trust.
- When was the last time it was updated?
- Don't give out personal information - the person on the other end of your
IM
or bulletin board could be a real creep. If it's something you wouldn't
tell a
complete stranger who walks up to you at the mall, then you don't tell
someone
virtually, either.
